     Rare Colors, True Chocolate and True Blue

The Liver and Blue colors are rare colors since they come from recessive color genes.The color of the hair is not crucial to classifying a dog as Blue or Liver color.

More significant would be the color of the “points” (eyes, nose, lips, paw pads) and skin. If these features are Liver rather than Black (except for the skin) then the dog is Liver.

If these features are Blue, then the dog is Blue, regardless of what the hair color may appear. 

Conversely, if these features are Black (except for the skin), then the dog is not Blue or Liver even if the hair appears to be Blue or Liver.

Shih tzu are classified by thier nose colors it is the nose that determines color.

Black NOSE-Red,gold,silver,black,black and white.brindle

Blue NOSE-At birth they may look black and may take up to 8 months to change to blue,the nose will have a purple and blue shine.Blues come in many colors True blues,platinums,lavenders,Rose,silver,charcoal and brindles.

Liver Nose
the color of the nose pigment is liver,from dark chocolates to light creams.

Coat colors in a shih tzu can change from birth they usally lighten ,but some darken.

 
Determining Color Of Shih tzu


In my first years of breeding I had alot of trouble distinguishing the colors of my puppies. I felt this page would be helpful for those who are having the same problem.
On this page you will see examples of newborn puppies and a description of their color.

This is an example of a newborn red liver and white shih tzu puppy. Her pigment is liver in color.

This is an example of a cream blue shih tzu puppy.Born light silver in color with a cream tint to her coat. Her pigment is slate blue in color.


This is an example of 2 Silver shih tzu puppies. Their pigment is black.

This is an example of a liver shih tzu pup. This baby has the liver pigment.


This is an example of a chocolate shih tzu puppy. Pigment is dark brown in color.

This is an example of a True Cream she has black Pigment.


This is an example of a gold and black sable shih tzu puppy. Some may confuse this color with a black and tan "Dobie" .

This is an example of a cream liver shih tzu. They are born cream in color and have liver pigment.


This is an example of a dark true blue shih tzu puppy. She has slate blue pigment.

This is an example of a True cream blue shih tzu puppy. Born white they start to get a cream tint to them. Their pigment is slate blue in color.

This is an example of a chocolate and tan sable  shih tzu puppy. Her pigment is liver.


This is an example of a solid black shih tzu puppy. Pigment is black.


This is an example of a Black and Tan AKA "Dobie" shih tzu puppy.

This is an example of a solid red shih tzu puppy. Pigment is Black.
